On July 15, the School of Integrated Circuits of Peking University has officially established Peking University. Coincidentally, just yesterday, the School of Future Technology and the School of Integrated Circuits at Huazhong University of Science and Technology were officially inaugurated. Prior to this, Tsinghua University also announced the establishment of the Institute of Integrated Circuits on the occasion of its 110th anniversary.
Since January 2021, the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council approved the establishment of the first-level discipline of "Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering", many universities, including Beihang University, Sun Yat-sen University, and Anhui University, have successively established integrated circuit-related colleges.

Cultivate fertile ground for semiconductor talents
The shortcomings of my country's semiconductor industry did not happen overnight. It was only with the U.S.'s cut-off of Huawei's supply and a series of overt and secret exclusions that it was gradually opened up and presented to more people. While attracting widespread attention, It has also further promoted the active deployment of politics, industry, academia, and research in the chip field.
"A year's plan is no better than a treed valley; a ten-year plan is no better than a tree; a lifelong plan is no better than a tree." The importance of talent training for industrial development is self-evident, especially in the face of the chip industry where there is a huge talent gap, talents are the basis for my country to achieve independent, controllable and domestic substitution.
It is true that the industry is not shy about the gap between the domestic semiconductor industry and the international industry. On the contrary, as early as 2003, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Xidian University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Southeast University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Nine universities, including the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, have each established a national integrated circuit talent training base under the approval of the Ministry of Education. The Ministry of Science and Technology has also allocated special funds for Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, and Xidian University.
Since my country has accelerated the layout of the semiconductor industry, it has also made frequent efforts in the talent training stage. In addition to the establishment of the first-level discipline of "Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering", the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Education have followed the "Scientific planning for industrial agglomeration, highlighting support for the best and strong for first-class disciplines, deepening the integration of industry and education for collaborative innovation, and promoting common Based on the four principles of “building and sharing”, the national integrated circuit industry-education innovation platform declared by some central universities was reviewed and selected. Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, and Xiamen University were the first batch of selected universities; Nanjing University, Huazhong Science and Technology University, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and Xidian University are the second batch of four selected universities for construction.
In addition to colleges independently initiated and constructed by universities, the style of jointly running schools by the government, enterprises, and colleges has gradually emerged.

At the same time, although the "Eastern Polytechnic University" funded by Yu Renrong, the richest man in China's chips and founder of Weir shares, has not yet landed, it is positioned as a "new research university in science and engineering" and Yu Renrong's accumulation in the field of chips. As a result, the attention and expectation of this university are no less than that of any prestigious university in China.
Experience talents, win the future
In recent years, "chip" seems to have become a word with its traffic. Regardless of age or occupation, you will pay more attention to the news about the word chip. The high attention of the whole people to the semiconductor industry is mixed. On the one hand, the huge talent gap has attracted the participation of more aspiring people under the high-traffic publicity, and companies are also willing to spend high salaries to hire talents, such as Huawei’s "genius youths." "The project and OPPO provide 400,000 annual salaries for fresh graduates in the chip industry; on the other hand, the high-pitched national sentiment may cause blind self-confidence and chaos following the trend, such as Wuhan Hongxin, Jinan Quanxin project thunder.
Undoubtedly, the attractiveness of my country's integrated circuit industry continues to grow. Under the active layout of the country, several emerging companies that want to seize historical opportunities have emerged, thereby providing employment opportunities. However, the chip industry is driven by technology and requires continuous R&D and breakthroughs. Technical barriers are the real moat of the industry. Therefore, for the domestic chip industry in the development period of the industry, high-level leading talents are needed to promote the industry.
However, from the perspective of my country's existing talent structure, there is still a lack of key talents who master the core technology of the industry. In the face of the fierce competition for high-end leading talents on an international scale, Yan Xiaolang, executive vice chairman of the Integrated Circuit Industry and Education Integration Development Alliance and leader of the National Demonstrative Microelectronics Academy Construction Expert Group, pointed out that to be able to effectively solve some of the current restrictions on the integrated circuit industry For development issues, we should pay attention to the cultivation of top talents, because the shortage of top talents is often difficult to make up. When cultivating cutting-edge talents, we should pay attention to practical training and let newcomers experience the wind and rain and meet the world, so as to exercise and improve their abilities. The training of integrated circuit talents should guarantee "quality" while guaranteeing "quantity".
And "experiencing the wind and rain, seeing the world" naturally means to go deep into the industry to learn, but this is precisely the most difficult part. It takes a long time for chip projects to settle from R&D and design to production test, and finally to large-scale mass production. In addition, the high R&D investment cost makes it difficult for most companies to bear the cost of trial and error for newcomers. This has also led to the chip industry to a large extent. Brain drain. Fortunately, in recent years, enterprises have become more and more accepting of industry "young whites". Taking Huawei as an example, the "Genius Boys" project launched in times of crisis has opened up a "green channel" for selecting new top talents.
There is no doubt that the "Huawei" golden sign is sufficient to attract a large number of aspiring young people, but after going through a series of processes such as resume screening, written examination, interview, supervisor interview, several ministerial interviews, president interviews, and HR interviews, it seems more "survived". Matching the positioning of "genius teenagers" is also closer to the core talents that are scarce in the industry.
Since Huawei launched the "Genius Youth" project in June 2019, 17 outstanding graduates have been selected. I don't know if it is a coincidence or a preference. 6 of them are from Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Regarding the development of "Genius Boys" after entering Huawei, it is reported that Zuo Pengfei and Li Yi, who was selected as Huawei "Genius Boys" in 2019, are currently engaged in cloud storage research and operating system formal verification work at Huawei.
The "talented youth" with a million annual salary will undoubtedly gain more opportunities for experience on Huawei's stage, but it is not easy to be alone in the short term. Although Ren Zhengfei once said bluntly that "Huawei can support a genius boy", but Not all companies can afford such a high amount of investment in talent construction.
It is true that a series of actions such as the development of basic education, opening up corporate resources, and deepening school-enterprise cooperation cannot be effective in the short term, but for the long-term pursuit and surpassing of my country's semiconductor industry, it will accumulate.
